Doctor Arturs in the Soviet Army in 1984The doctor Arturs Vavere was born in 17 March 1965, Riga – capital of Latvia.

He spent his childhood and youth in Riga. In 1983, he finished Riga Secondary School No. 25. At the same time, Arturs obtained a driving license. After the graduation, he tried to enrol in Riga Medical Institute, but could not pass the entrance exams. In order to avoid the service in the Soviet Army in 1983, he enrolled at Technical College No. 15 to obtain a qualification of analytical chemistry lab technician. In 1984, he graduated from the College with honours.

In 1984, he re-enrolled into Riga Medical Institute and the medical faculty. The legislation had been changed in that year and Doctor Arturs Vavere was called for two-year service in the Soviet Army. He served as a driver in the battalion of signallers in a small town of Chita, which is situated near Baikal Lake in Siberia.

In the autumn of 1986, he returned from the army and continued to study at Riga Medical Institute. During the studies, the name of the institution was changed. While studying he worked at RMI Biological Department, afterwards – in an ambulance. During this time, he got married and became a father of two children.

In 1993, doctor Arturs graduated Latvian Medical Academy and received a doctor’s degree. Then, he enrolled into residency and was specialising in infectious diseases. At first, dr. Arturs began his medical practice as an intern doctor at the infectology centre and after that he worked as venereologist.

In 1997, he began his private practice. The Doctor established a public organisation “Latvian Organisation for Safe Sex”. Managing the organisation, the attention was paid to reduce the prevalence of HIV/AIDS in Latvia. With the support of the UN he started to test anonymously for HIV/AIDS. During the 1997s and 1999s, he detected 50% of all HIV/AIDS cases registered in Latvia.

In 1998, under the management of Arturs Vavere, the first twenty-four-hour station of syringe exchange was established in Latvia (Riga, Dārzu Street 3). With the support of Soros Foundation the first informative portal about HIV/AIDS (www.aids.lv) was created.
Between 1996 and 1999, the doctor received several international grants for implementing various projects. Thus, with the support of UNAIDS, HIV/AIDS testing to identify the epidemiological situation in the country was started in Latvia. The results of the study were published in “Reports of UNDP on Development of Latvia” (1997, 1998).

In 1998, an extensive study on prostitution in Latvia was carried out. The results of the given study were summarized and included in the book: “Trafficking in Women and Prostitution in the Baltic States: Social and Legal Aspects” (IOM, 2001).

Along with the study, he participated in the development of different educational materials, cooperated with other public organisations to deal with projects related to sexual health, gender equality, human trafficking.

Doctor Arturs and David in interview at FitFhm radio in 2006In 1999 and 2000, the professional activity of doctor Arturs changed radically. He stopped his activity in HIV/AIDS spread reduction. Doctor Vavere established and managed the institute of men’s health and focused on men’s sexual health. In 2004, the program of penis enlargement was developed. The new facilities to treat a premature ejaculation were created.

In 2005, he was elected as the chairman of the Latvian Sexologists Association where he is a general manager. The doctor is one of the most famous sexologists in Latvia. He participates in variable interviews and is published in different media sources.
